Tuesday, August 20th is “Energy Day” in the Wonders of Wisconsin “WOW” Educational Area at the Central Wisconsin State Fair. Partnering with the K-12 Energy Education Program at UWSP (KEEP), Resource Specialist Gina Smith will lead the merit badge workshop meeting many of the more difficult badge requirements.
Admission to the fair itself on Tuesday is $5.00 for ages 12 and over and free for youth under 12 years of age. There is no charge for the workshop itself.
Registered adult scout leaders will be given free admission (FOUR per Troop max) if their troop registers by August 6th. Email confirmation will be sent and leader passes will be on a “will call” basis at the admission gate on August 20th.
The workshop will start promptly at 10:00 a.m. and should finish in about 2 hours. Scouts must stay until requirements 2, 3, 5, and 8 are completed (maximum 2 hours). A leader or parent must be present with a maximum of 7 scouts per adult.
How will this work?
PART ONE: (Done prior to the workshop)
Scouts must complete the following requirements prior to coming to the fair. These requirements will be checked before the workshop begins and discussed briefly.
- Req 1: Use or Conservation of Energy (article, website, blog, podcast)
- Req 6: Energy Data Pie Charts (Can use Wisconsin data if you prefer to over United States data)
- Req 7: Energy Systems (Biomass, Cogeneration, Fossil Fuels, Fuel cells, Geothermal, Nuclear, Solar, Tidal/wave/ocean, Wind)
PART TWO: (Completed at the fair workshop)
Using the Pedal Power, Solar Tilt & Load Kit, and Energy Audit Kits, scouts will complete the following at the workshop:
- Req 2: Show you understand energy forms and conversions
- Pedal Power
- Solar Load/ Wind Turbines (construct your own)
- Req 3: Energy Efficiency (discussion / Learn to Use Energy audit tools)
- Req 5: Energy Waste Scavenger Hunt/Discussion
- Req 8: Careers in Energy (Jigsaw Activity)
PART THREE: (Home energy audit following the event and email to Gina))
- Req 4: Conduct a home energy audit and keep a 14-day log recording what you and your family do to reduce energy use.
- Scouts email completed Requirement 4 to Gina (gsmith@uwsp.edu) within 30 days of the event,
