Goldenrod soldier beetle on yellow goldenrod flowers

Goldenrod soldier beetles are native to North America and get their name from the goldenrod flower which is its main food source.  Other host plants include Queen Anne’s lace, rattlesnake master, and milkweed. They are harmless since they do not sting or bite and they do not cause damage to plants. The habitat for this common beetle includes meadow and fields where their host plants grow. Adult beetles will eat small insect eggs, aphids, and small caterpillars but dine mostly on pollen and nectar making them an important pollinator. Their population peaks August through September when their host plant is in bloom. Adult females lay their eggs in the soil; when the larvae hatch they feed on grasshopper eggs as well as soft-bodied insects.
